Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brenda Johnson has found herself irresistibly led to record her experiences, relationships, meditations, prayers -- and her disappointments -- in words that are musical, reflective, and undercut with irony. She brings curiosity, candor, and unfailing sympathy to a life lived with deep appreciation. A most rewarding read! ---Quincy Howe, Ph.D. Professor of Classics, Comparative Religion A sacred sister who has intensely lived the life she "sings about" in her poet-Spirit song, Brenda Johnson has penned wisdom-word poems. They are layered with love and joy blending together as a literary legacy which promotes soul growth and mental elevation; quite apropos to her spiritual discipline as a long-time yogi and artistic adorer of the Divine. ---Linda Cousins-Newton: Director, Ancestral Promotions “For many of us, denial of many levels, allow us to experience only the margins of living, lulled into thinking, if we must, that our daily existence is some sort of rehearsal. In these pages of poems, we see the evolution of this but most importantly the growth that comes when we accept that our life experiences is far from a rehearsal, it’s actually the main event.” ---Chester Higgins: Author, photographic artist: NY Times It certainly reflects many similar experiences among those of us who have been blessed to live a full life. However, you have a gift of being able to explain it in such a powerful voice while using just a few well placed words and thoughts. I wish I could think that clearly. ---Carolyn S. Download or read book Dancing with Shadows written by Shiraz Pradhan and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific determinism, Tarot cards, Cinema, Music, Love, and Quantum Physics. The narrator negotiates love, murder, and war in this captivating philosophical journey. Pradhan is exceptional in showing the narrator's holistic approach to understanding. Quantum physics and love. A united theory of everything? It is an idealistic adolescent goal, and this is what makes Dancing with Shadows so interesting. This is a coming of age story of a young man in East Africa whose intuition tells him that these things are all connected. In his growing self-awareness and world weariness, he is obsessed with connecting the dots of his life in order to reveal some profound significance (i. e. the "music of God"). Who hasn't pondered such questions? How is my life unique or significant? How much more would life mean to me if I understood, say, the music of God...and what is the music of God? Although he is a young man continually preoccupied with sex and love, he is essentially a philosopher. He wants to understand things such as the life application of a quantum wave collapse or the difference between sex and love. This story is a Hamlet-esque self-portrait in his constant questioning. It echoes the uncertain and awkward, yet outwardly confident manner of Holden Caulfield. But above all, this story made me think of the kind quest for mystical self-importance that I recall from Joyce's narrator in "Araby."

Book excerpt: Lithium for Medea is as much a tale of addiction—to sex, drugs, and dysfunctional family chains—as it is one of mothers and daughters, their mutual rebellion and unconscious mimicry. Here is the story according to Rose—the daughter of a narcissistic, emotionally crippled mother and a father who shadowboxes with death in hospital corridors—as she slips deeply and dangerously into the lair of a cocaine-fed artist in the bohemian squalor of Venice. Lithium for Medea sears us with Rose’s breathless, fierce, visceral flight—like a drug that leaves one’s perceptions forever altered.

Download or read book Killing Monsters written by Gerard Jones and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2008-08-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children choose their heroes more carefully than we think. From Pokemon to the rapper Eminem, pop-culture icons are not simply commercial pied pipers who practice mass hypnosis on our youth. Indeed, argues the author of this lively and persuasive paean to the power of popular culture, even violent and trashy entertainment gives children something they need, something that can help both boys and girls develop in a healthy way. Drawing on a wealth of true stories, many gleaned from the fascinating workshops he conducts, and basing his claims on extensive research, including interviews with psychologists and educators, Gerard Jones explains why validating our children's fantasies teaches them to trust their own emotions, helps them build stronger selves, leaves them less at the mercy of the pop-culture industry, and strengthens parent-child bonds. Jones has written for the Spider-Man, Superman, and X-Men comic books and created the Haunted Man series for the Web. He has also explored the cultural meanings of comic books and sitcoms in two well-received books. In Killing Monsters he presents a fresh look at children's fantasies, the entertainment industry, and violence in the modern imagination. This reassuring book, as entertaining as it is provocative, offers all of us-parents, teachers, policymakers, media critics-new ways to understand the challenges and rewards of explosive material. News From Killing Monsters: Packing a toy gun can be good for your son-or daughter. Contrary to public opinion, research shows that make-believe violence actually helps kids cope with fears. Explosive entertainment should be a family affair. Scary TV shows can have a bad effect when children have no chance to discuss them openly with adults. It's crucial to trust kids' desires. What excites them is usually a sign of what they need emotionally. Violent fantasy is one of the best ways for kids to deal with the violence they see in real life.

Book excerpt: Nulapeiron: a world isolated for twelve centuries. Its billions of inhabitants occupy subterranean strata, ruled by a trained aristocracy of lords and ladies whose power base is upheld by oracles. But revolution has touched all of its many cultures – failing in its intent, yet changing everything. Now Lord Tom Corcorigan – the commoner-turned-noble who renounced his power; the poet, logosopher, and holder of the key to understanding the myriad wonders of mu-space; the legendary one-armed warrior, former revolutionary, and would-be peacemaker – lies fatally wounded. His survival is dependent on his meeting with a mysterious seer whose spacetime-warping talents transcend the merely Oracular. It is a confrontation that will result in bitter tragedy and loss. Can the woman he loves be truly dead, or can quantum mysteries lie beyond the grave? Turning his back on a society sliding once more into anarchy and chaos, a disillusioned and despairing Tom wanders this strange, stratified world in search of meaning, love, and his own salvation. But it seems Nulapeiron is threatened by a vast, insidious, and terrifying enemy whose origins may lie beyond their world, beyond their understanding. And now is the time for legends to be reborn. Sequel to the acclaimed Paradox and the second book in the Nulapeiron Sequence, Context is a thrilling, daring and complex novel that confirms John Meaney as one of British science fiction’s most original and exciting practitioners.
