Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If anyone wishes to know the history of this war, I will tell them that it is our maritime superiority gives me the power of maintaining my army while the enemy are unable to do so. Wellington's remark reveals that he fully appreciated the strategic importance of the naval support for his campaign, although it has largely escaped later historians. As this new book amply demonstrates, the maritime dimension was broad and deep: The Navy not only transported the armies to the theatre-and evacuated them when required, as at Corunna-but also provided direct support to the land campaigns and tied down large numbers of enemy troops by diversions against coastal targets. But the biggest contribution was less visible, though arguably the most significant: In order not to lose local support, Wellington refused to let his army live off the land as the French had done, so all provisions-food, clothing, and arms-were supplied from the sea. This was an enormous undertaking, involving nearly 1000 ships (or about 10 percent of the British merchant marine), which had to be convoyed and protected.

Download or read book Wellington's Other Army written by Sérgio Veludo Coelho and published by . This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the Portuguese Army during the Peninsular War, especially after its reorganization by William Carr Beresford and Miguel Pereira Forjaz, and how it become Wellington's other army, which he trusted to carry out large military operations in the Iberian Peninsula. This is a topic so little addressed in the context of military history at an international level and so this work examines the rebirth of the Portuguese army after the first French invasion and the accelerated, effective, but also costly reorganisation process that formed part of a joint action between the Portuguese Regency and the British Government. In addition to the material and operational aspects, actions, weapons and uniforms, the book seeks to provide an overview of the daily lives of Portuguese troops, of the difficulties felt by these men in the troubled and traumatic period of the Peninsular War. These events were described in archival documents, namely in the Orders of the Day within the period referred to, as well as in the documentary series of the Military Historical Archive, Torre do Tombo National Archives, Porto District Archive, Braga District Archive and the National Archives, in London, as well as in many English narratives.

But Esdaile reveals a much more complicated picture in which women are discovered to have experienced, responded to, and participated in the conflict in various ways.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis examines the role of the Bank of England during the Peninsular War. Between 1807 and 1814, Britain was involved in a war in the Iberian Peninsula against Napoleonic France. Due to changes in the British monetary system in the late eighteenth century, the Bank of England became increasingly attached to the British state and its ability to wage war. This, however, often led to arguments between the Bank and the government. Despite this, this thesis will demonstrate that the Bank of England saw itself as self-consciously part of the British state and was a vital part of the victory in the Peninsular War." --

This says it all. William Napier was the brother of the militarily more famous General Sir Charles, who made his reputation in India and is probably best known for his conquest of the province of Scinde. William, who like his brother did well in the Peninsular War, made his name as the author of the six-volume history War in the Peninsula and this is Dobson s abridged version. As he says in the introduction it has been his aim to give an account of only the principal events of this long and bitterly fought campaign, paying tribute to Napier s masterpiece of detailed military history.
