Download or read book Madness and the Loss of Identity in Nineteenth Century Fiction written by Judy Cornes and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An obsession with individual identity pervaded Western thinking in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This critical study examines the concept of identity in the works of nineteenth century American and British authors, focusing especially on psychologically mad, vague, shifting and dualistic characterization. Authors examined include Ambrose Bierce, Henry James, Wilkie Collins, Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Chesnutt, Lillie Devereux Blake, and Mary Elizabeth Braddon. The text discusses how each author was influenced by contemporary events (such as the American Civil War, slavery, the Second Great Awakening, and the beginnings of modern psychology), how those experiences shaped contemporary intellectual thought regarding identity, and how the resulting concern with personal identity was manifested in literary characters who were either in search of or running from themselves.

Download or read book Love Does Not Seek Its Own written by Jonathan D. Ryan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book arises out of contemporary questions regarding the nature and formation of the church amidst an economically divided society. Looking to Augustine of Hippo for guidance, Jonathan D. Ryan argues that the movement from private self-interest toward common love of God and neighbor is fundamental to the church's formation and identity amidst contemporary contexts of economic inequality. Ryan demonstrates the centrality of this theme in Augustine's Sermons and his monastic instruction (principally the Rule), illustrating how it shapes his pastoral guidance on matters pertinent to economic division, including use of material resources, and attitudes toward rich and poor. By reading Augustine's Sermons alongside his monastic instruction, this volume allows for a closer understanding of how Augustine's vision of a common life is reflected in his pastoral guidance to the wider congregation. The book's concluding reflections consider what the church in our time might learn from these aspects of Augustine's teaching regarding the formation of a common life, as members are drawn together in love of God and neighbour.

Download or read book The Literary Monster on Film written by Abigail Burnham Bloom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many monsters in Victorian British novels were intimately connected with the protagonists, and representative of both the personal failings of a character and the failings of the society in which he or she lived. By contrast, more recent film adaptations of these novels depict the creatures as arbitrarily engaging in senseless violence, and suggest a modern fear of the uncontrollable. This work analyzes the dichotomy through examinations of Shelley’s Frankenstein, Stoker’s Dracula, H. Rider Haggard’s She, Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Wells’s The Island of Dr. Moreau, and consideration of the 20th century film adaptations of the works.
