Book excerpt: Myth and reality collide on an Ithaca campus “in a comic fantasy of wonderful energy, invention, and generosity of spirit” (Alison Lurie). Stephen Titus George is a young writer-in-residence at Cornell University in upstate New York. An imaginative bestselling author in search of a new story, he’s seeing his life as a modern-day fairy tale, and himself as a would-be knight looking to woo a lovely maiden—or two: the bewitching Calliope and his guiding light, Aurora Borealis Smith. However, his happy ending might not be up to him. There’s another writer who has a greater influence on campus. Unseen, yet twice as formidable, Mr. Sunshine is an eternal semi-retired deity who’s been fashioning his own narrative for centuries. He has all his characters in place—dragons, sprites, gnomes, and villains. And now, finally, his hero. As Mr. Sunshine’s world comes to fabulous and violent life, can Stephen decide his own fate if it’s already being plotted by a god? An epic of life and death, good and evil, love and sorcery, Fool on the Hill lands Matt Ruff happily on the shelf between Tom Robbins and J. R. R. Tolkien for every lover of the “funky and fantastical” (New York magazine). “Inspired . . . rich in flavorful language . . . [a] dazzling tour de force.” —San Francisco Chronicle “The plot comes together like a brilliant clockwork toy.” —Locus

Book excerpt: This book expresses the challenges the author faced in life while attempting to fit into constantly changing environments. Throughout the book, the author explains the transitions involving his fool's hill-a concept presented to him by his grandmother. Early in life, the author experienced changing life situations, and he desired to be accepted, which led to mischievousness then gravitated to crime and other rebellious acts. As a high school dropout, the author volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps, and after enlistment, struggles continued. After earning his high school diploma, discharge from the military, and the birth of his son, the author decided to turn his life around but struggled making the transition. During employment challenges and several money-making ventures, the author earns two associate's degrees, a bachelor's of science, a master's degree, and eventually, a doctorate in education degree from Pepperdine University. Haphazardly, he finds employment that helps troubled individuals, and from communicating the challenges he faced, assisted others in finding their way. Behold, the author discovers and finds his "Why" as stated in the quote by Mark Twain. Nevertheless, after facing personal challenges including divorce, he detaches from family and finds his love for the outdoors, especially backpacking, which many African Americans don't partake. Several challenging escapades in the wilderness he explains humorously. Eventually, the author reconnects with family. This book differs from others because it describes the challenges an African American male, who isn't a celebrity, faces while transitioning from a troubled inner-city life to one that helps others succeed. Included in the book is much history about the civil rights era and beyond. Many situations explained with a comedic twist.

Book excerpt: GENOCIDE - IN THE NAME OF LOVE Across the planet, only a handful of giant, overcrowded, doomed cities exist - cities like Norcal, where multiple marriages are recommended and drug-taking is encouraged. Across the planet, everyone waits for the reclamation of a lost technology that can save them. Everyone, that is, except for the members of the Order of St Jerome in Norcal. The Order of St Jerome believes in peace, in morality, in two-person marriages and old-fashioned values. The trouble is, in the name of love the Order of St Jerome has decided to sacrifice the Earth...

Book excerpt: A series of contiguous sketches detail one young man's trip " over fool's hill." Beginning with his first sexual encounter the story progresses through his early adolescence in the war years of World War Two, where he and his friends indulge in a riotous rebellion against authority and the morality of the time. His High School years start his "Trip" in earnest as he and his associates find the joys of booze, cigarettes, and sex and the thrill of bawdy parties. Our young hero's adolescence continues into his twenties when he encounters the freedom of Southern California, all of its temptations, its new experiences, and its milieu of sex, partying and sophomoronic fun.

Book excerpt: The lifestyle of kids growing up in the 1940's and 50's were quite different from those in the generations that followed. We had more freedom to roam and explore. We had many experiences that were common to us that the young people of today will never know. I wanted my children and grandchildren to know what we did as youngsters, how we thought, the problems we encountered, our experiences and how we saw the world through the eyes of a teenager. My grandparents were youngsters before the civil war and I have often wondered what they experienced growing up and I never had the opportunity to find out. This book will give my grandchildren and those that follow, how we lived through the depression years, WWII and the Korean Conflict. As I look back, I would have to say, our generation was blessed and growing up was some of the best years of our life.
